Identity Crisis

I'm having one.

About my blog.

So, Derek and I were talking tonight about why it would be a good idea for us to use my blog as a "job" and  make a bajillion dollars off of it. Then he could easily not stress about jobs and money and all that jazz.

Trouble is... I'm not so much with the "monetize-ing" of my here blog. Sure I'm rockin' the google ad words and all that jazz, but seriously??? Come on.

Ad words is not the issue.

The issue is: My niche (pronounced Nitch of course).

What is it?

People who  make a living off their blogs have to have the corner on a market of some kind or another.

For example: Cjane and Nienie have the "Mormon Mommy" niche down pat. (Well, if we're gonna get really technical, NieNie has the niche on being inspiring and amazing.)

I'm not really a cook, therefore a cooking blog ala my good friends Kate and Sara would be out of the question. (Although I might have success with a "cooking wrecks" blog... except sometimes things I make turn out fine. DANG IT!)

Fashion? TAKEN! (And we all know I'm like a fashionista... wait.)
I have recently stumbled across a MOST impressive crunchy Mormon Mommy. I am in love with her.

My blogger-buddy Amy has the humor down to an art. I mean like TEARS whilst reading because it's so so funny.

I even ran into a MMB (Mormon Mommy Blog) that has claimed the niche of "Taking pictures of what we eat (cheeseburgers) and of our cute puppy." Awesome. Young, married, unchildren-ed girl making a fortune off her blog. She has over 3,000 followers. About eating out, and her puppy. And I love it!!! I am slowly reading her blog like a book. RIDICULOUS!

And while I thoroughly enjoy my own narcissistic variation of the theme of "Mormon Mommy blogger" it's just not going to make me a million bucks.

I ADORE my blog. I clicky-click away on a frequent basis because I find solace in it. I love to write about the ridiculousness that is parenthood, the gospel, my home, my life.

But writing about MYSELF is NOT A NICHE. (or it is, but it's already taken.)

And by-jiggery I NEED A NICHE.

Cuz Derek really wants to quit his job.

Find your niche and you can make $50 a month, just like I do :o) I love being rich.

If only we could all blog and make millions. Or hundreds of thousands. Or thousands. Or just hundreds. Heck...even a buck or two...

I have a niche suggestion. It might actually bump you to the coveted $50 a month category...I will call. ;-)

There's a crunch Mormon mommy blog and you're not it???? NO way!
MA

Could you do a crunchy Mormon mommy blog who is underappreciated by her wasteful overindulging parents and other relatives who find her crunchiness endearing and hilarious but don't necessarily want to embrace it with both hands? (Too sticky).

Haha! I like your mom's idea! Or how about being the crunchy Mormon mommy blog that shows a lifestyle that is something approaching reasonable and livable for most people? Because that other blog does not.

It's definitely not easy to find a niche...but just because you keep this blog going for fun doesn't mean you can't start something else for profit. Maybe there's an ebook you could write, or affiliate marketing. I mean people like Dooce make a killing from blogging about nothing but I honestly don't know why everyone reads her. I mean she cracks me up but she's totally neurotic and not like me AT ALL.

If you're really serious about monetizing your blog I suggest starting with your own domain. I used to have my blogs on blogger and they exploded when I put them on their own website. You can still leave them hosted through blogger, just with your own domain name. And then you have to start finding people to advertise on your sidebar...anything related to your blog--and maybe some things that aren't so related too lol.

It's not easy and it took me a long while really find out where I wanted to take my blog(s) but if you know you can do it, the advertisers will start to come to you. Use the law of attraction to help yourself.

My husband, BTW, is also very eager to live off of my blog and other ventures. I can't wait for that day to come!!

Thanks for stopping in at No Ordinary Homestead

I'm going to have a blog that is just me eating hamburgers, without the cute puppy, while wearing headbands with giant flowers on them. It will be a huge it.

LOL! I loved this!! I laughed. Out loud.
I wish I could make money off my blog. But I don't have a niche.

Actually, I made my first whole dollar. And I felt so proud. I only have the google ads but no one wants to click on those!

But good luck! I'm heading over to check out your new site now!

Hi! I floated over from MMB and can I just say "AAAAAAAA-MEN!!!!" I believe my husband adn I have had this very same conversation and I have the very same desires. I've noticed the craft blogs have rabid followings, but I don't craft that well. I guess my thoughts are only worth...well, a penny. Thank you for sharing this. I thought it was funny and fun (how redundant!)!

Amen and Hallelujah. I think my niche is to way over-share. Unfortunately, it doesn't make me any money.

P.S.- I'm now going to read your blog like a book. :)
