Wow, ya'll. I had NO idea people felt so strongly about puppies. I mean, I know I feel strongly about them (as in don't like them) but wow.
So, we kind of decided we were nutcases, and undid the "We'll take a puppy" thing. Mostly, it's because I was just gone for two days at a birth and was all, "What would we do with a puppy???" So. Um. Yeah. I kind of forgot that my chosen field often leads me to be away for undisclosed amounts of time. Whoops. A kid you can take to the sitter, but what do you do with a puppy? A dog would even be fine, you just leave the doggy door open. Could you take a moment and imagine what a puppy would have done to my house while no one was here during the day for two days???
So, my sweet fantastic sister Sarah said she totally understands. I love her so much.
We're still thinking we'll get a dog though, just not a puppy. I texted our landlord to see if he was cool with it, and his exact reply (via text) was "U can get a dog, just not a big huge one that will chew everything up."
Cool. Since puppies chew everything, I think puppies are OUT!
Therefore Derek is currently on the internet looking at ADULT dogs. :) I kind of think we could handle one that comes all grown up and potty trained.
Relax though, we're just looking. :)

Hopefully an older doggy will work better for your family! Sorry the comments were so negative (mine included)! I love animals--dogs/puppies included...just not enough to have a "pet" at this point in my life (except a fish!).
Beagles are good. but if you want a great family dog, an australian shepherd (and they are dang smart). But, you have to give them lots of love ...
All of the dogs I've had were considered "rejects". Either because they were a) returned to the store because the owner thought they were "ugly", b) too old to be a "cute" puppy but just an "older puppy" by the time we got him, or c) too energetic for his owner since they kept him locked in a kennel for 23 hours of the day.
Note, we got all 3 dogs in Vegas and all 3 dogs are awesome.
Have you looked into greyhounds? Kind of funny looking, but they're great with kids, super calm, and can hold in their pee for about one million hours. The adoptable ones usually range in age fro 2-4.
Just a thought.
Australian sheperds ARE the best, Alisha's right. They actually come in mini size, too, so they're the size of a beagle-ish without the baying. That's the kind John and I have agreed upon for someday not even close to the near future. Our Reverend has one named Gryffindor (because his grandkids were forbidden to have anything to do with anything remotely linked to Harry Potter... oops :P haha). Anyway, Gryffindor is adorable and mellow, but would run and run and play and play with the kids. SO... keep that in mind.
Well, now I'm gonna have to go find out what everybody said about puppies!
As for me, I already have two kids and a husband to take care of. I don't know if I could handle anything else. :)
P.S. Do not got to Sarah's blog. I just went there and now I want one of those puppies. It is dangerous!!! I will see you on Saturday? I will let you know what time!
YES! Alice, Raising Cane's here we come! I went to Sarah's blog and am proud to say I am resisting quite well. NO PUPPIES FOR ME! :)
And Amy, we have looked into greyhounds, then Derek found these funny little dogs called whippets that look like mini-greyhounds, then he stumbled upon a bull dog whippet mix called a "bull whip" and then I had to forbid him from researching it any further. ;) I do love the idea of rescuing a race dog...
Thanks for the shepard ideas. We want a medium sized dog, so shepards a good option, assuming the hair is medium to short. NO LONG HAIRED DOGGIES! I don't even brush my own hair, I can't be expected to groom a dog.... ;)
