It's a TWISTER! It's a TWISTER!

It happened. We had a real-live Tornado here in town last night. First one in like 25years. Derek and I waited it out as long as we could until we had to yank our sleepy babies out of their beds and run down to the neighbor's house. (Gotta love apartment living...)

We are ABSOLUTELY fine, power is back on, our house and cars and scooter all are unscathed. About 30 houses in Manhattan and many businesses were destroy. Kanasas State University is estimating about 20 million dollars in damage to the campus. The city has far more than that.

So, while I was patiently waiting to find out if we'd get swept up in the funnel cloud, I decided it was time to pack a 72 hour kit. It was pathetic, and I'm on a mission today to get started. Silly me, leaving this long.

We hung out in the neighbors' bathroom until about midnight. We live in an apartment complex with 7 other LDS families, so it was lovely to join together, say a prayer and hope to goodness that we didn't get blown away.

Henry slept through the whole thing, but Spencer was a different story. When we got home, Henry was just tossed back in bed, but it took quite a while to convince my little baby that is was NOT MORNING! He finally fell asleep in his bed at about 1:00. But, of course, he was up at 6:30 LIKE ALWAYS this morning. ARG!

Anyway, we went out and took pictures this morning. The tornado came ridiculously close to our house. About 200 yards from our house is a cooking school, that now has less roof than it used to. K-State campus is a 2 minute drive. We are counting our blessings that we were protected.

This is a school fence and roof that have become one:

Someone's yard with an upturned tree:

The Toyota/Honda dealership that is two miles from our house was hit very hard.

These next ones are where the Hardware store used to be, and in the second one you can see pretty far back, every business in that quarter mile area were flattened. Apparently, it was a big tornado, between 1/4 and a 1/2 mile wide.

Sorry the pictures are so bad, we were driving, and it's still quite cloudy. I tried to lighten them as much as possible.

So, anyway, we survived. I'm not a panicky person, but I'll admit, this was scary! The lightening was completely green and the storm sounded like a train was coming straight at us. I have NEVER seen it rain so hard.

And, the best, again, Henry slept through the whole thing. :)

HOLY COW!! You survived your first big tornado...and what a crazy amount of damage! So glad that you're safe...and that you had a good place to weather the storm! I hear Topeka had one today, as well...and that there are more storms on the way. Hopefully the boys sleep through them!!! Love ya, and stay safe!

Morgan,

I so glad you and your family road it out okay. What a frightening night that must have been. Yeah, I miss the midwest, but definitely not the tornadoes.
